At the beginning of July 2023, the summer school “Why We Must Remember” started and took place in the city of Belene.
The participants:
- learned more about the history of the recent past from experts and researchers;
- met live with survivors from the concentration camp in Belene;
- participated in the exhibition “Reading through Socialism: GDR (German Democratic Republic) and PRB (People’s Republic of Bulgaria)”;
- visited the Belene camp on Persin Island and took a boat tour of part of the Danube Belene Islands.
At the end of the school, the young people worked as volunteers and cleaned up part of the camp area, as well as the schoolyard of the “Vasil Levski” Primary School – Belene.
